The exhibition Between Colony & State: Louisiana in the Territorial Period, 1803-1812, and its companion online component, examines the people, places, and events that shaped this fascinating period. Highlights include manuscript maps, newspapers from the period, and artists' depictions of life during this time.

Out-of-state visitors: Adults, $16; Srs (65 and up), $15; Child under 3 free The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) is proud to participate in "¡Sí Cuba!" a major citywide presentation of arts, music, and culture related to Cuba taking place in New Orleans January through April 2010. ¡Sí Cuba! is a collaborative venture between museums, universities, galleries, and other arts organizations in New Orleans, co-organized by NOMA, Newcomb Art Gallery, and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University. NOMA's participation in ¡Sí Cuba! includes two exhibitions: Luis Cruz Azaceta: Swimming to Havana, a solo exhibition of paintings and Polaridad Complementaria: Recent Works from Cuba, a traveling show organized by the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, Havana. Polaridad Complementaria will be co-presented at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University. The solo exhibition Luis Cruz Azaceta: Swimming to Havana will feature a suite of new paintings, all from 2009. The phrase "Swimming to Havana" proposes the impossible as no unassisted human is capable of traversing ninety miles across the Caribbean Sea from Florida to Cuba. Yet it is a journey said to have taken place countless of times in the minds of Cubans wishing to reach the United States, and Cuban immigrants dreaming of returning home. In his suite of new paintings, Azaceta invites viewers to undertake their own imaginative journeys through his imagery. These paintings explore the idea of "crossing over" in myriad ways: between abstraction and figuration, between geometric and organic forms, between Cuban and American culture, and between the historically linked cities of New Orleans and Havana.

Big Freedia's Hookah Bounce January 7, 2010 - January 2, 2014 |
Add to Itinerary |
Times: 10:00 pm http://hookahbounce.com Location: The Hookah, 309 Decatur St Phone: (504) 943-1101 Admission: $5.00 Every Thursday Big Freedia and DJ Rusty Lazer along with other local bounce artists hit the stage at The Hookah. If you're wondering what is bounce, here is what Wikipedia has to say about Bounce Music: Bounce music is an energetic style of "New Orleans hip hop" music which is said to have originated as early as the late 1980s, but is typically believed to have begun with the 1991 single "Where Dey At by MC T.Tucker. A highly influential cover of "Where Dey At" was also released by "DJ Jimi in 1992.
Bounce is characterized by "Call and response" style party and Mardi Gras Indian chants and dance call-outs. These chants and call-outs are typically sung over the Triggerman beat, which is sampled from the song "Drag Rap" by the Showboys, or Brown beat, which is sampled from Derek B's "Rock The Beat". The sound of bounce has primarily been shaped by the recycling and imitation of the "Drag Rap" sample: its opening chromatic tics, the intermittent shouting of the word "break", the use of whistling as an instrumental element (as occurs in the bridge), the "drag rap" vocals and its brief and repetitive melody and quick beat (which were produced with use of Synthesizers and drum machines and are easily sampled or reproduced using like-sounding elements). The genre maintains widespread popularity in New Orleans, LA and the southern United States and has a more limited following outside of the Deep South. Throughout this decade, the "Take Fo'" record label has dominated the genre with artists such as "DJ Jubilee and "Willie Puckett." Katey Red, "Big Freedia" and "Sissy Nobby have also made significant contributions.

The Contemporary Arts Center Presents - Aïda Ruilova: The Singles 1999 - Now January 28, 2010 - May 2, 2010 |
Add to Itinerary |
Times: Thursday through Sunday, 11:00 am- 4:00 pm http://www.cacno.org Location: Contemporary Arts Center, 900 Camp Street Phone: (504) 528-3805 Admission: $5/general, $3/students & seniors, FREE To CAC members Join us for the Opening Reception for Aïda Ruilova: The Singles 1999 - Now. Combining classical cinematic devices with a distinctively jarring, low-tech sensibility, New York-based artist Aïda Ruilova creates dark, narrative video work. Aïda Ruilova: The Singles 1999 - Now presents a survey of the artist's single-channel video work since 1999. Ruilova is one of a young generation of artists who employ media in innovative ways with a do-it-yourself aesthetic, often drawing upon contexts - like cinema, music, and popular culture - that exist outside the art world. Her short video loops often feature characters performing cryptic and physically uncomfortable actions, revealing her fascination with the conjunction of horror movie aesthetics and the sublime. A compelling, though obscured, narrative is created, overwhelming the viewer with questions. Unidentified, Ruilova's characters and their relationships remain ambiguous, and the viewer is left to actively detangle the action.
Ruilova's works have a strong formal and associative relationship to music. Ruilova, a classically trained musician, was a member of the experimental music group Alva. Her videos feature visceral experiences of discrete sounds - among them evocative phrases muttered repetitively, heavy breathing, scrunching guitar strings, and vinyl LPs being scraped across cement - that reinforce both the physicality of her editing and the isolation, claustrophobia, and extreme psychological stresses of contemporary life that are alluded to throughout her work.

Weisman Gallery Phone: (504) 659-4100 On January 30, New Orleans Museum of Art will kick off the 2010 contemporary exhibition schedule with a celebration of New Orleans artists Quintron and Miss Pussycat. Widely known for multimedia performances in music clubs and alternative art spaces over the past 15 years, Quintron and Miss Pussycat have inspired audiences around the world with their innovative approach to puppetry and organ-based music. Parallel Universe: Quintron and Miss Pussycat Live at City Park will be the artists' first museum exhibition. In addition to past work, Miss Pussycat will debut a new music video, and an original music album by Quintron will be recorded entirely on-site at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Parallel Universe: Quintron and Miss Pussycat Live at City Park is organized by Miranda Lash, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. The exhibition will begin with a vibrant and comprehensive display of Miss Pussycat's puppetry, a "parallel universe" the artist creates and channels within her set designs and performances. Hundreds of her puppets will take over the first gallery, spanning the length of Miss Pussycat's career. Arranged in miniature landscapes, her handmade puppets fuse the surreal and fantastical with a dose of whimsy. Functional in purpose and beguiling in form, the puppets enact scenes laden with satire, humor, and wit, while appearing innocent and child-like. Describing the puppets as "portals to the spirit world," the artist explains that the ritual of making a puppet show allows the puppets to assume a life of their own. Her versatile working method as a puppeteer ranges from swiftly arranging puppet shows for rock concert stages, to painstakingly directing videos with large support crews and arranging prerecorded soundtracks. Miss Pussycat's presentation will include the debut of her latest puppet video.
